Manchester is the south side’s answer to Scott’s Addition — a former industrial district that’s rapidly becoming one of the most exciting urban neighborhoods in Richmond. Sitting just across the Mayo Bridge from downtown, Manchester offers loft living, river access, and skyline views, often at price points noticeably more reasonable than equivalent units across the river.

Most of the housing here is new construction or warehouse conversion — lofts, condos, townhomes, and mid-rise apartment buildings, many with rooftop decks looking back at the downtown skyline. Original brick warehouses have been turned into striking residences with high ceilings, exposed beams, and big factory windows. There are still pockets of older single-family homes and the occasional row of historic Manchester rowhouses, but the neighborhood’s identity is increasingly defined by its modern transformation.

Day-to-day, the neighborhood is steadily building out its food and drink scene — Hatch Local food hall, Legend Brewing (a Manchester institution), Camden, Brewer’s Waffles. The James River is right there, and the T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge gives walkers and cyclists a direct, scenic route across the river to Brown’s Island and downtown.

Public schools are operated by Richmond Public Schools. Manchester offers urban living, modern construction, and a neighborhood with a clear upward trajectory — without the north-of-the-river price tag.
